Abstract

There has recently been a promising increase in focus on co-production and participatory methodologies, with the views of patients and their families becoming an integral part of service development. People with lived experience of mental health difficulties also enter the mental health profession across a range of roles. Drawing upon personal reflections and recent literature, this discussion piece considers several topics relevant to professionals with lived experience including perspectives and experiences of stigma, self-awareness, self-disclosure and ethical practice. Implementing onward policies and strategies to address the barriers faced by mental health professionals with lived experience and promote a more inclusive working environment is essential.
