Abstract

In May 1880 when, in Chicago, Francis F. Browne started publishing a magazine he called the Dial, he was aligning himself with a spiritual and intellectual tradition. Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson edited the first Dial, a quarterly, in Boston from 1840 to 1844.
