Musicmaking and the City. Making Sense of the Montreal Scene

Abstract

This article is concerned principally with the study of scenes and bohemias in contemporary Montreal. It explores a number of ways in which these terms might be given more rigour and offers a set of frameworks which can be applied for the analysis of urban musicmaking. Discussing the experiential, material and discursive aspects of musicmaking, the author offers a provisional model of how to consider scenes in relation to the cities in which they unfold.
