‘Half London, Half Home’ Generation Resilient

Abstract

This final chapter returns to the city Hargeisa, thirty years on from the start of the civil war, once the colonial capital of British Somaliland. That history and its legacy is interwoven between the testimonies of a younger generation born or brought up in London who return to Hargeisa. It chronicles the experiences of those who have stayed, those that find they cannot, or those who move between London and home. It explores the challenges they face but also the rewards many feel from staying. The desire to return to help or to give back is a strong one, with many young women committing to helping the country recover from the long term effects of civil war, trauma and the impact of political isolation.
