MDI is developed at the gateway that decides smart irrigation actions for each autonomous sub area inside a whole farm. The results presented show that MDI outperforms the common threshold-based irrigation method by around 40% in our analytical use case. Abstract

Nowadays, water has become an increasingly scarce and valuable resource, yet, by far the largest demand for the world’s water comes from agriculture. Irrigation is still not efficient in the sense of water usage as well as yield increase. In this paper, we propose a generic irrigation model based on Markov Decision Processes termed Markov-Decision based Irrigation (MDI) for creating automatic and precise irrigation policies for an energy and water efficient farming as well as to ensure good crop growth.
