Abstract
Using a newly deviced method for simultaneous recording the electromanometric and myographic motility of the esophagus, patterns of the positive wave and the action potential by swallowing were discussed in canine cases and human beings. Regarding the onsets of appearance of the positive wave and the action potentia of theintraluminal pressure of esophagus by swallowing, these appeared first at the upper, next at the middle and then at the lower esophagus. The different onsets of appearance of the positive wave and the action potential were showed asfollows. At the upper esophagus the positive wave and the action potential appeared almost at the same time. On the other hand at the middle and low esophagus the action potential appeared earlier than the positive wave with about 0.5 seconddifference on an average. The duration of the positive wave and the action potential of the esophagus were as follows. At the lower esophagus both showed longer duration than at the other
