Not Just an Offender, But a Person

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the content of the philosophical conversations in Grendon. Through the participants own words, the chapter describes the importance of abstract conversation, not linked to offence or offending behaviour. Here, the distinction between therapy and education come to bear. The research shows that opportunity to engage with each other as human beings, as opposed to prisoners or offenders, was of particular importance to this group. The chapter concludes with a discussion of community, identity, and self-understanding.
