Abstract

Due to burn out of fossil fuels, wind energy resources have been gradually used. The fault characteristics are significantly different from the traditional power supply due to the special structure of the wind farms. There are many structural similarities between squirrel-cage inductor generator (SCIG) wind farms and direct-driven wind turbine with permanent magnet generator (D-PMG) wind farms. At present, the literature mainly focuses on DFIG and D-PMG wind farms. There are few studies on SCIG wind farms, and few articles comparing the fault characteristics of them. This article will compare and analyze the fault characteristics of SCIG wind farms and D-PMG wind farms under different fault conditions. Accordingly, causes of such faults are explained. Finally, it is concluded that there is no significant difference about the fault characteristics of them at the wind farm outgoing transmission line.
