Just War: Reflections from the Lutheran Tradition in a Time of Crisis

Abstract

1. Shortly after the events of September 11, 2001, the President of the Seminary at which I teach issued a thoughtful call for continuing respectfulness towards the pacifist witness amongst Lutherans, even amidst the present crisis. I would unreservedly echo that call. I have indeed throughout my teaching career encouraged students to take seriously the work of contemporary pacifist theologians such as John Howard Yoder and Stanley Hauerwas.
