Abstract

Different from the positive correlation with strain-rate of elongation, the compressive flow behaviors were unaffected by strain-rate in cast Mg-10Gd-3Y-0.5Zr (wt.%) alloys. This was attributed to the combined effect of loading mode and rare-earth elements, resulting that twinning was suppressed in tension but prevailed in compression. It was concluded that the rare-earth elements inhibited twinning. However, this suppression effect can be reduced or eliminated in compression due to the prior prismatic slip.
