Abstract
HVDC system simulation studies are usually done on a HVDC simulator. Alternately, digital simulation studies of a HVDC system have been reported in the literature using EMTP software. This paper gives the evaluation of performance of simulation studies for a HVDC transmission system using ATP, ATOSEC5 and SIMUSEC simulators. Although, the three simulation software packages have been respectively developed for the time domain solution of power systems, power electronic converters and converter-fed machine systems, they have been suitably modified to study a benchmark HVDC system. An evaluation of the performance characteristics of the three simulators with respect to the following features constitutes the subject of this paper: (1) user-friendly data preparation, (2) on-line parameter variations, (3) computation time and (4) numerical instability problems associated with the computation.<>
