A power transformer is one of the most important links in a power transmission and distribution system. Continuous monitoring is essential to evaluate performance and ensure safe operation of the transformer. An integrated global system for mobile communication (GSM) is developed to control and monitor the present status of a switch yard. It is a cost-effective and reliable solution for continuous monitoring of the present status of a transformer using the recent advancements of GSM and Embedded System technology. In the present investigation, condition monitoring system of a transformer has been designed using GSM technology, to know the present status of the transformer through SMS, even when personnel is away from the control room of the substation.
