Abstract
Envy is a vice that is both widespread and uniquely corrosive, undermining relationships among ministry and teaching colleagues. This article draws upon a wide array of historical and contemporary ministers, theologians, philosophers, and social scientists to look at the meaning of envy, the contexts in which envy is most likely to emerge, the destructive power of envy, and the perspectives and practices that are necessary for envy to be tamed in church and school environments.
