Empathy as an Ability: Structure and Development during Training in Psychological Counseling

Abstract

This article proposes a model for developing empathy as an ability. It introduces a model of empathic skills based on the abilities model of V.D. Shadrikov. It analyzes the structure of an empathic ability as consisting of functional, operational, and motivational components. The model is used as a basis for considering techniques and methods of developing empathy. The article presents the results of an experimental study of the development of empathy among undergraduates during training in psychological counseling in co-experiencing psychotherapy workshops.
