Weak Links in the Canine Scent Detection Behavior Chain

Abstract

Training for detection dogs involves creating a chain of behaviors with a reward at the end. When backchaining behaviors, there is always a risk of inadvertently reinforcing unwanted behaviors, which can make for a less reliable detection dog. This article takes a close look at chains of behavior in scent detection, and argues that indication behaviors should always be carefully chosen and mindfully rewarded
