Abstract

To ensure 'fair play', athletes are usually divided into different categories (e.g., according to age or weight). The division of athletes by gender is one of the most important divisions. The classical division into male and female disciplines derives from the physiological assumptions regarding competitors. To ensure the rules of 'fair play' in this regard, sex verifications have been performed in the past. These procedures were invasive and degrading for the athletes. Modern approaches to the definition of gender in sports deviate from the binary concept of gender, representing a significant step towards respect for human rights in this important area.
