In this paper, the authors propose a method of controlling the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) based on the short-term forecasting results for wind speed and solar radiation intensity to overcome this impediment without RES curtailment. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy has been tested on the 500kV power grid in the Central Highlands area of Vietnam via quasi-dynamic analyses considering the load variation, wind speed and solar radiation intensity for 24 hours. Abstract

Power generation by renewable energy sources (RES) integrated into Vietnam's 220kV-500kV grid has increased dramatically in recent years. However, the increasing role of RES has led to overloading of the series capacitor banks connected to 500 kV transmission line, in several cases of operation in the power grid of the Central Highlands area.
