A Study on the Image of the Colonial Ruler Projected in The magnanimous lover and the Theatrical Form of Regular Performances

Abstract

Geugyesuryeonguhoe held the second performance in June 1932. Three works were performed at this time, including The magnanimous lover written by John Ervine. The 2nd performance was not a performance that received much attention overall, and The magnanimous lover was also evaluated as ‘normal’. However The magnanimous lover was an Irish play, and Irish plays performed in the 1920s and 1930s were often regarded as examples of special significance in Korean (Joseon) theater world. At the time of the regular performance Geugyesuryeonguhoe translated the play literally and performed it as it is in the original, and as a result the considerable value of this work could not be accurately portrayed. Therefore, academic research on The magnanimous lover has not been done properly so far, and the problems that appeared in the process of performing such a play on stage have not been essentially discussed. Based on the effect of ‘Injeong-play’ performed by The magnanimous lover, only the evaluation that the performance of the work was ‘normal’ was confirmed. Therefore, in this study, the image of the ruler and the objection of the ruled projected in this work will be explored, and the stage formation of such a theatrical message will be looked into critically.
