Abstract
This is an attempt to explore and clarify the meaning of a phrase – the movement of character – which is still very much in use although everyone knows it is nothing but a figure of speech inherited from a long familiarity with realist fiction. Ian Reid's critical approach provides the theoretical foundation for this paper, especially in its effort to go beyond narratology.
