Abstract

Implementing assistive technology (AT) service delivery system is a complex task that goes well beyond finding and/or developing the appropriate technologies. It requires a concerted effort incorporating policies in nations and sub-sectors of that nation which may involve interaction with Ministries as including: Education, Public Health, Social Welfare, and Labor. It requires development of a delivery system which is compatible with the country and its infrastructure and it requires substantial professional training. It also must incorporate involvement of disabled persons organizations and non-government organizations (NGOs). Above all it requires a commitment to the improvement of the lives of people with disabilities as seen from a human rights perspective and a true commitment to partnership. The authors share their experiences in developing and implementing a plan of establishing assistive technology service delivery system in Thailand based on a Canadian --- Thai partnership that spanned 5 years. The networking among the AT development origin source to the target users, persons with disability (PWD), are mentioned. Along the AT path, the policy making, the policy driven, the collaboration and the commitment of the responsible organizations, are also emphasized as the practical practice.
