Gender Issues in Psychology

Abstract

Course Overview: Welcome to Gender Issues in Psychology! This course is designed to introduce the theoretical and empirical issues related to psychology of gender. Traditional and contemporary theories that focus on aspects in the lived experiences and psychological development of individuals will be examined. In this course, the social construction of gender will be deconstructed to understand how gender affects all aspects of our lives at both the societal/cultural level and the individual level. Gender differences across various domains will be discussed, including physical health, mental health, relationships, communication, and the workplace. The course will cover material traditionally offered in a psychology of gender course, with an added component of examining issues of diversity, including race/ethnicity, class, religion/spirituality, sexuality, disability, and age.
