Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate, using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), the self-perception of the oral health condition and the periodontal condition of chronic kidney disease patients on dialysis. Methodology: The study was cross-sectional and case-control. Participants were over 18 years of age, of both sexes and underwent periodontal evaluation and answered questionnaires about sociodemographic data, comorbidities, oral hygiene habits and the OHIP-14. The tests used were Chi-square or Fisher’s exact; Shapiro-Wilk and Mann-Whitney; t-test; to compare groups. The significance level was 5%. Results: The sample consisted of 90 patients, 40 from the experimental group and 50 from the control group, of which 54 were men and 36 were women. The mean age in the experimental group was 47.88 ± 14.45 and in the control group it was 43.38 ± 15.56 (p=0.015). The total Ohip-14 score was 8.51 ± 6.24 (CKD) and 7.94 ± 7.40 (control) (p=0.32). The CKD group had worse periodontal condition compared to the control regarding the presence and severity (stage) of periodontitis (p<0.0001), visible plaque index (p=0.0002) and number of missing teeth (p<0.0001). Conclusion: The self-perception of oral health of chronic kidney patients did not differ from individuals without kidney complications. However, there was a greater periodontal impairment in patients on dialysis.
