Abstract

Books, even ones that are collections of past works, take lots of work, much of it not done by the authors. So there are many people to thank. They include Edward Elgar and Alan Sturmer, who long ago suggested the project and, each year at the ASSA meetings – first Edward and then Alan – with their notebooks in hand, reminded Dave of the project, and nudged him to move forward on it. The book would not have existed without them. Then there are the publishers of the original articles, who kindly gave permission for the articles to be reprinted in this volume. We thank them all. We also would like to thank our families, Huei-chun’s husband, Otto, and their two boys, Cornelio and Tiberio, and Dave’s wife, Pat. They put up with our academic pursuits with a smile and encouragement, even when publishing deadlines interfered with the joint pleasures of life, and we thank them for it. Huei-chun would also like to thank Philip Schofield, Director of the Bentham Project at University College London and Eric Beinhocker, Executive Director of the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the University of Oxford. Professor Schofield’s steadfast support and the honorary affiliation with UCL he provided were invaluable in supporting her to carry on academic work even when family took most of her time. Once the boys were a bit older, allowing Huei-chun to return part time to work, Eric Beinhocker, Executive Director of INET at Oxford, was also very supportive of the project. He made it possible for Huei-chun to focus on finalizing the manuscript while juggling between family and work. We thank them both. Once the manuscript was turned in to Elgar, the Elgar organization started up, and did their usual excellent job in processing it. Thanks are due to Erin McVicar for her role in preparing the project at its early stages and Jenni Gardner for project managing the process of clearing the formal copyright permissions. Elgar Publishing has a wonderfully efficient publishing organization, and it didn’t surprise us at all when they were named the 2017 Independent Publisher of the Year.
