The essential need for the formulation of the optimal policy is to determine the schedule of releases from a reservoir system, which can maximize or minimize the utilities associated with the release of water. Numerous algorithms have been used to advance the results of Reservoir operation and maximize the net benefit, but due to their limitations, the selection of an appropriate model for deriving reservoir operating policies is difficult, and more often there is scope for further improvement as choosing a particular model for reservoir operation depends on the reservoir characteristics considered, availability of data, specified objectives, and constraints.
