Familism and Neighborhood preferences

Abstract

This study using World Value Survey data shows that the stronger one’s familism, the more likely one is to dislike a certain group of people. In their neighborhood preferences, those who regard family more important in their life tend to less favor people of different color, immigrants/foreign workers, homosexuals/the AIDS-infected, or people of different religion. These results show that strong familism could undermine the mutual trust of society as a whole.
