Abstract
Today's world has observed the rapid growth of intelligent communication technology as efficient community infrastructure that is capable of distributing massive amounts of information anytime and anywhere. However, before we are able to freely exchange all information with anyone we choose, various communication barriers such as those of language, mistrust and distance need to be overcome. To discuss these issues, and to exchange ideas and results across a broad spectrum of fields related to universal communication technologies, two international symposia have been held in Kyoto and Osaka, respectively, in the past two years.
