Abstract
In this article is considered the phenomenon of Buddhist confessional diplomacy in 1950– 1980s. It is shown, that the continuing struggle with religion was not an obstacle for international activity of confessions and was used as «soft power» for popularization of the Soviet ideological project. The diplomacy of Buddhist leaders became a steady channel of alternative communication between the two world poles, contributing to a reduction in international tensions.
