Reconsidering Utopia from the Perspective of Cognitive-affective Schema

Abstract

The complexity and ambiguity of Utopia make it a disputed concept in the academic field, resulting in an increasing need to redefine it. From the perspective of Cognitive-schematic theory, Utopia could be defined as an adaptive mechanism triggered by the lack of sense of security. Such a mechanism is in effect a cognitive-affective schema within which the individual could construct idealized time-space, social relations, identity and alternative values. Through such a cognitive-affective schema, the individual could find it possible to satisfy the needs of emotional regulation, happiness pursuit and even social reformation.
