A new approach to CIM in the pulp and paper industry

Abstract

A discussion is presented of an alternative approach to computer-integrated manufacture (CIM) involving mill-wide control layers as part of the control hierarchy. The authors' alternative embraces mill-wide control system and business planning, communication software, standard interfaces, real-time operation control, and a phasing-in approach that addresses people and cultural issues. This method does not risk obsolescence or require large initial capital investment, but focuses on manufacturing objectives.<>
