Abstract

The air and soil temperature is associated with the processes of soil-plant interaction, affecting plant development, therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of air and soil temperature on the diameter of radish roots, as well as of the air temperature on the chlorophyll content. The experiment was carried out in the open field at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI), Campus Professora Cinobelina Elvas (CPCE), in Bom Jesus – PI. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized block design, using the coral radish cultivar. The mean diameter of the roots was obtained with the aid of a caliper along the time series: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 days after sowing, with four replications, the chlorophyll content was determined with a portable chlorophyllometer chlorofilog®, the air temperature data were obtained from the Automatic Meteorological Station, belonging to INMET, installed on the UFPI/CPCE Campus and the soil temperature was recorded with the aid of a digital skewer thermometer (accuracy ±1°C ) at different depths (0, 5, 10, 15 cm), finally, the correlation was made through the Pearson correlation coefficient between the air and soil temperature data with the chlorophyll content and the mean diameter of the roots of Radish using computer system R version 3.2.2. The increase in air and soil temperature caused a reduction in root diameter, while the increase in air temperature stimulated the increase in total chlorophyll content. KEY-WORDS: Thermal stress. Raphanus sativus. Plant metabolism.
