The experiments were demonstrated over 18 km of standard single-mode fiber using 1.29 and 1.52 micron edge-emitting laser diodes at 34 Mbit/s. The optical emitters and detectors were linked to the SM fiber through specially designed WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) couplers.
