The geometry of the antenna is derived from an ordinary L-shaped monopole antenna, with the L- shaped radiating patch folded over the ground plane. Compared to ordinary patch antennas, the proposed design uses a smaller ground plane, resulting into a compact antenna. The design is presented for antenna operating over the frequency range from 250-850 MHz. Simulations are performed using the MoM-based Ansoft Designer CAD software. A prototype antenna is fabricated and tested. The prototype antenna has a 10- dB RL bandwidth of 560 MHz ( 117%) and a gain of 4.1dBi at the centre frequency. The gain variation over the band is 1.8 dB.
