Abstract

The article describes the processes occurring in the frictional contact zone under real operating conditions. Analyzes the existing material science approaches to the issues of surface destruction during friction. Studies the structural aspects of surface layers that can effectively resist wear. The conditions of structural self-organization of friction surfaces on the meso-, micro- and nanoscale are formulated. Examples of modern technologies that maximally realize hardening mechanisms to increase the wear resistance of steels are given.
