George Forbes, 1849-1936

Abstract

George Forbes was born in Edinburgh on 5 April, 1849, and died at Worthing on 22 October, 1936. He went for a time to the Edinburgh Academy, just twelve years after Maxwell and P. G. Taithad left the school. He was the son of James David Forbes, Leslie’s successor in the Chair of Natural Philosophy in Edinburgh , famous for his theory of glaciers, one of the founders, with Brewster, of the British Association, and one of the first members of the Alpine Club.
