Communicating devices IEDs enabled with IEC standards have been shown with operations in publisher and subscriber mode. Laboratory setup with two IEDs communicating in an Ethernet network has been implemented here. The test results of hardware setup are showing GOOSE sending and receiving operations of the two IEDs through the Ethernet switch they are connected with. Abstract

Substation automation protocols and architectures are used to overcome various limitations of power system automation while implementing various network topologies. Presently the network topologies that are being used are Ethernet, TCP/IP, wide area network (WAN) and computers. In substation automation sector a new protocol IEC 61850 has been released by International Electrotechnical Commission or IEC for global use.
