The conditions for the occurrence of Cumulonimbus Clouds are easily met, namely up-draft, aerosol, and humid air. Lightning disturbances at the substation are divided into two, traveling wave from the transmission and the direct lightning strokes at the substation. Traveling waves from the transmission can cause flashover in equipment. While direct lightning strokes at the substation can cause backflashover in the insulator of rod structure and flashover in the equipment. Therefore, a lightning protection system is needed in the substation. The solution for traveling waves from transmission is insulation coordination. The National Electricity Company in Indonesia is planning to build a 500 kV power transmission system in Sumatera, Indonesia.
