Abstract

A dry cell of the Leclanche type is described which exhibits improved performance characteristics at low temperatures. The cell is designed to operate at −40° C (−40° F). The improved characteristics are obtained by incorporating lithium chloride in the dissolved condition in the liquid electrolyte of the cell. Cells have been developed and produced which at −40° C gives capacities of 10% to 20% of those obtained at 21° C (70° F) depending on the severity of the drain.
