THE PHENOMENON OF THE GREAT STEPPE IN MODERN KAZAKH HISTORIOGRAPHY. REVIEW OF THE BOOK: KHAN DZHUCHI. THE GREAT STEP

Abstract

The review analyzes a collective monograph of Kazakh and Russian authors "Khan Dzhuchi. The Great Steppe", published in Nur-Sultan by Editionsdu JIPTO in 2020. It is devoted to various aspects of the history of the Eurasian steppe space -the Great Steppe in the period before the Mongol conquest, the Golden Horde time and the Kazakh Khanate. The structure and separate parts of the book, having an independent character, its disadvantages and advantages, heuristic value of separate positions and author's concepts formulated by the authors of the monograph are considered. Despite some controversial points and some eclecticism of the content the book is of certain interest, reflecting the current state of Kazakhstani historical science and trends in its development. The authors advance a number of the provisions, substantiating the existence of the special historical, cultural and civilization community "Great Steppe", the role of Kipchaks in the formation of Ulus Dzhuchi and Kereits in the formation of the Mongolian power. The work fully corresponds to the modern trend of Kazakh historiography to substantiate the continuity and continuity of statehood traditions on the territory of steppe Eurasia and the conceptualization of Kazakhstan as an heir of the Golden Horde.
