LITERARY SOURCES OF KIRILL OF TUROV’S WORD FOR THOMAS SUNDAY

Abstract

In his sermons, Kirill of Turov makes ample use of quotes, allusions and reminiscences. As a rule, he appeals to hymnography, although his Word for Thomas Sunday relates to Gregory of Nazianzus’s sermon for the same holiday. In this text, Kirill of Turov relies on a reader who had just heard the sermon, recited, in compliance with the regulations, on that very day. Thus, without this specifi c background, one would be hard put to understand the Word for Thomas Sunday. The comparison of the two texts offered in the article highlights additional meanings in this work by Kirill of Turov.
