Abstract

The authors present the design of a knowledge-based protocol engineering environment. The appropriateness of artificial-intelligence techniques for such an environment is discussed and a system architecture is presented, which is a synthesis between conventional and knowledge-based technology. Algorithms are given for producing the heart of the environment, a protocol expert system, semi-automatically. Current experience suggests that this approach is applicable to complex, real-world protocols.<>
