Abstract
Ilha dos Arvoredos is an insular coastal island environment, and it sits at 90 km from the city of São Paulo and 1.6 km from Praia do Pernambuco in Guarujá, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. As it was designed in 1950 by a Mechanical Engineer, the vast majority of its flora is currently composed of exotic vegetation as well as some invasive ones, which makes it an impaired ecosystem in order to maintain its biodiversity and functional ecosystem services. Studies and research are quite scarce for these environments, especially when it comes to vegetation, so this article aims to develop a flora restoration plan to favor the protection of environmental resources, such as fresh water and soil of the study site, and to promote the local biodiversity mitigating the existing anthropic action, through the methodology of Key for Choosing Forest Restoration Methods, application of software for mapping the area and comparison of native plant species available in the literature for the coastal island environment, resulting in the presentation of native plant species of interest for ecological succession. In the case of plant restoration, the chemical analysis of soil macronutrients indicated a non-degradation of the soil and was essential for decision making. The action plan begins with planting seedlings and sowing seeds. Currently, the Fernando Eduardo Lee Foundation (FFEL) and the Nova Maré Institute (INMAR) are partners and carry out the Sustainable World Project, taking visitors to Ilha dos Arvoredos to get to know the open-air laboratory designed by the foundation's engineer of the same name and learning concepts of sustainability and the environment.
