Overcoming Client Resistances to Talking About Sex

Abstract

Despite the changes in sexual attitudes and behavior since the 1960s, individual still experience discomfort in talking about sex. This article focuses on the important first step in social work intervention in sexual problems: overcoming clients' resistances to divulging and exploring sex-related concerns. It is suggested that client resistances often stem from social workers' discomfort and avoidance of the subject. Suggestions are offered for overcoming both client and worker resistances.
