Abstract

The purpose of this literature review was to explore the lack of parental involvement in a learner’s process. Having both parents in the home can affect a child mentally and academically. The theoretical framework that helped to develop this literature review was based on the ecological theory by Bronfenbrenner. The ecological theory focused on child development. Therefore, Bronfenbrenner scope was based on a complex system of relationships. Parental involvement is an ongoing problem across our public learning institutions. I offer positive recommendations to public and secondary schools to reduce the lack of parental involvement. These recommendations were offered from a leadership perspective. The author examined literature related to the research problem. Additionally, the lack of parental involvement is discussed at length, particularly how the lack of parental involvement affects students in the process. The lack of parental involvement and support becomes tedious during student learning process and academic achievement. Factors associated with the parent’s lack of involvement were discussed. Keywords: Parental involvement, public school, secondary school, student achievement, thinking process, scaffolding, challenges of parental involvement
