The Application of Nurse-Midwives

Abstract

Once trained African American nurse-midwives joined with white nurse-midwives and this chapter describes the ways in which they were particularly effective in the improvement of maternal health. South Carolina’s midwifery institute is used to demonstrate the use of an interdisciplinary team that included nurse-midwives. At the helm of the impressive maternity care service was Dr. Hilla Sheriff and African American nurse-midwives, Maude Callen and Eugenia Broughton.
