Abstract

Improvements in voice rehabilitation over the past century have paralleled the surgical success of laryngectomy. The establishment of thetracheoesophageal puncture marked a turning point in the development of successful and dependable voice rehabilitation. Surgical optionsinclude both primary and secondary placement of a tracheoesophageal puncture. Though complications, such as pharyngoesophagealspasm or prosthesis leakage may occur, patients should expect functional voice restoration after laryngectomy.
