Os discursos governamentais nas estratégias de reforma do Novo Mineirão: modernização e tradição no jogo que acontece fora das quatro linhas

Abstract

We aimed to analyze the discourses present in the proposed modernization of the New Mineirao, one of the stadiums hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup, located in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. For this purpose we relied on the relations between the notions of modernization and tradition, especially found in the following documents: Estadios de Futebol: recomendacoes e requisitos tecnicos (2011), Planejamento Estrategico Integrado (2010) and Mineirao entre os melhores do mundo (2012). We emphasize the connection between the traditional and the modern as a crucial element in the at-tempts to legitimize the transformations promoted in the stadium and, especially, to provide a certain evaluative status to the changes, through a call to the memory and collective identity, which is achieved, paradoxically, by the preservation of tradition through modernization. We found the modern as a recurring term in the documents, as opposed to the unwanted tradition, while other terms are selected to maintain the identity with the new stadium.
