Abstract

This chapter considers the lessons that can be learned for family law by considering the life course. It looks at the legal response to marriage and questions the extent to which the law does, or should, privilege marriage. It considers whether other relationship may be more deserving of support than marriage. It also considers the basis of parenthood and how the law allocates parental status.
