Abstract

A novel single-ended gap-coupled shorted patch antenna (SPA) is described in this paper. The finite ground plane effect on radiation patterns of both the conventional shorted patch antenna and the novel gap-coupled SPA is investigated. It was found that the gap-coupled SPA achieves better radiation performance with stable symmetrical radiation patterns and better cross polarization suppression. Moreover, the gap-coupled SPA shows enhanced gain with reduced electrical size compared to the conventional SPA for the air substrate.
