Precaution Based Cooperation of Licensed Users in Improving the Spectrum Utilization

Abstract

In order to improve the utilization of underutilized licensed spectrum, the concept of Cognitive Radio (CR) can be a great opportunity to utilize. For proper execution of CR, the process of spectrum sensing is a necessary task. An efficient spectrum sensing ensures the improvement in throughput of cognitive radio as well as ensures the protection of licensed user from possible interference of unlicensed users. This paper proposes a precaution based cooperative approach in which the unlicensed and licensed users collaboratively work together to improve the spectrum sensing performance of CR. Under this precautious cooperation, the proposed approach not only improves the utilization of highly dis-regarded underutilized spectrum, but also ensures a better protection of primary user. The proposed approach has an extra advantage of using the un-favorable conditions of channel noise as a boon to improve the licensed spectrum utilization as well as the channel capacity.
