Abstract
The EISCAT _3D radar is the next generation incoherent scatter radar system which will provide 3D monitoring of the atmosphere and ionosphere. This paper focuses on the design and test results of the antenna element for the EISCAT _3D system. The antenna element adopts a metal cross-shape antenna element with four knife-shaped array arms to reduce snowfall accumulation. A cross-shape parasitic sheet is add to the top of the element to decrease the active reflection loss of the antenna in the array. The simulated results showed that the active reflection loss for all scan angles in the transmitting band is <-12.1dB, and the passive return loss a single antenna are better than -17.5 dB in whole 218-248MHz.
